Amirsoy in Summer: What to Do at a Ski Resort Without Snow

Trails, the gondola, bicycles and restaurants at the top: how to spend a summer day at a mountain resort when the skis are put away but the mountains stay beautiful.

Amirsoy in Summer: What to Do at a Ski Resort Without Snow

Amirsoy is mostly known as a winter resort: a gondola, groomed runs, snow and queues for lift passes. But in summer it transforms and becomes a place for relaxed walks. The slopes turn green, the air is dry and cool, and the crowd is much smaller than on winter weekends. Below is what to do at the resort in the warm season and how to organise the day.

Where it is and how to get there

Amirsoy lies in the Bostanlyk district of the Tashkent region, in the mountains not far from Chimgan. From the capital the road runs through Chirchik and Gazalkent and takes roughly an hour and a half to two hours on an ordinary day. Details: Tashkent — Chirchik. On hot days the highway towards the mountains is busy, so leave in the morning.

Riding the gondola

The main way up is the gondola lift. Cabins carry you up the slope in a few minutes, and during the ride you can see the valley, forest and, if they have not yet melted, snowy peaks in the distance. For many visitors the ride itself is an experience. Tickets are sold at the ticket offices by the lower station, and the price depends on the season and the day of the week, so check on the spot. In windy or rainy weather the lift may not run. At the upper station there are viewing platforms and a cafe.

Walking the trails

In summer the slopes become pedestrian zones. You can pick a route to match your fitness:

  1. Easy walks around the upper station, for an hour to an hour and a half. Suitable for families with children and older people.
  2. Medium routes on trails along the slopes, for two to three hours. You need comfortable shoes and a little stamina.
  3. Long hikes towards neighbouring valleys. For these it is better to have experience or go with a guide.

On walks, do not stray from marked trails, watch the weather and carry water. Fog and rain can catch you out even on a clear day.

Bicycles and active leisure

In summer the resort often runs mountain bike rental, and other activities are offered too: rope attractions, scooter rides, playgrounds. The set changes from season to season, so check current offers on the resort's site or with the administration. For cycling wear a helmet, gloves and protection, and do not pick up speed on steep descents.

Restaurants and cafes at the top

The resort has cafes and restaurants serving national and European food. It is pleasant to have lunch with a mountain view, and after a walk you want hot tea and shashlik. Prices at mountain resorts are higher than in the city, which is normal. On weekends it is better to book tables in advance.

Weather and clothing

In summer it can be hot below and cool and windy at the top. So bring layers: a T-shirt, fleece and a light jacket. Shoes should be closed and stable; sneakers with a good sole suit easy trails. Do not forget a hat and sunscreen, since ultraviolet is stronger in the mountains. In the evening and after sunset it gets noticeably cooler.

How Amirsoy differs from its neighbours

ResortCharacter
AmirsoyModern infrastructure, gondola, restaurants, comfort
ChimganMore trails and lodging, more traditional atmosphere
BeldersayCalmer and quieter, a lift and views of Charvak

Many combine Amirsoy with Chimgan or Charvak in a single trip.

Day plans

  • A relaxed day. Gondola ride in the morning, a walk near the upper station, lunch in a restaurant, descent in the afternoon.
  • An active day. Early arrival, a long trail, lunch, rest and return.
  • A day with children. A short walk, a playground, lunch and back before evening.

Getting there without a car

Minibuses run to the resort, but their timetable depends on how full they are. A taxi costs a fair amount. A good option is a shared ride through Yo'ldosh. You book a seat with a driver heading from Tashkent towards Chirchik and beyond and pay only for your seat. It is cheaper and more predictable than looking for a car on the spot. Agree your return in advance or book the trip back in the evening.

Practical tips

  • Check the forecast and lift hours the day before.
  • Arrive early to avoid queues and traffic.
  • Carry cash: terminals do not work everywhere.
  • Do not leave rubbish and do not leave the trails.
  • Prices for tickets, rental and food are approximate and depend on the date.
