Qarshi to Termez: Heading South via Guzar
The route from Kashkadarya to Surkhandarya: the mountain stretch near Derbent, checkpoints between regions, summer heat and shared rides in both directions.

Qarshi and Termez are the centres of the country's two southern regions, Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya. They are about 280 km apart, and in a few hours the road takes you from the steppe plain through the mountains to the hottest spot in Uzbekistan on the bank of the Amu Darya. The route matters both to locals and to travellers heading south via Qarshi rather than over the pass near Shahrisabz. Here is what to expect.
Distance and time
- Distance: about 270–290 km.
- Driving time: 4.5–5.5 hours without long stops.
- Key points: Qarshi, Guzar, the Derbent area, Sherabad, Termez.
The return takes the same time, but the climb into the mountains from the Sherabad side is harder on cars in summer as engines overheat, so drivers stop more often.
Stages of the road
Qarshi to Guzar
The first 60 km cross the Kashkadarya plain. The road is flat, lined with wheat and cotton fields, orchards and villages, and takes about an hour. Guzar is a small town where the roads to Shahrisabz and Termez split, a convenient place to refuel and buy water.
Guzar to Derbent
After Guzar the road enters the foothills and starts to climb. This is the most beautiful and most demanding part of the route: climbs, long descents and bends. The Derbent area is known for the gorge called the Iron Gates, where since ancient times a route ran between the lands north and south of the mountains. Cliffs, dry slopes and scattered villages create a stark but striking landscape.
On this stretch:
- trucks are slow, so overtake only where it is allowed and you can see the oncoming lane;
- filling stations and shops are few;
- mobile coverage may drop.
Derbent to Sherabad to Termez
The descent brings you into the Sherabad valley, where the real heat begins. Sherabad is a district town with a bazaar that sells early melons and watermelons in summer. From there it is about 60 km on a flat road to Termez.
Checkpoints and documents
There are checkpoints at the border between Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya and on the approach to Termez where documents are checked. This is routine for a border region:
- keep your passport at hand, not in the boot;
- foreigners should carry their registration;
- do not photograph checkpoints or people in uniform;
- answer questions calmly about where you are going and why.
Summer heat
Surkhandarya is the hottest region in the country. From June to August, Sherabad and Termez can reach 40–45 °C during the day.
How to get through the trip:
- Leave early. Leave Qarshi at 5–6 am and you will be in Termez by 10–11, before the peak heat.
- Water. At least 2 litres per person, plus a reserve.
- Air conditioning. When booking, ask whether the car has it. On this route in summer it is not a luxury.
- Clothing. Light, pale and covering shoulders and arms from the sun.
- The return trip. From Termez, too, leave early to climb into the mountains before the heat.
From October to April the road is comfortable, and in spring the mountains around Derbent are covered in green and flowers.

What to see at the end of the road
