Spring in Uzbekistan: A Route of Blossoming Orchards and Tulips
A week in April: apricot blossom in the Fergana Valley, tulips in the Zaamin foothills, and Samarkand and Shahrisabz before the summer heat arrives.

Spring in Uzbekistan is short and vivid. In late March and April apricot, cherry and almond trees blossom, the foothills fill with poppies and wild tulips, and the cities have not yet reached their exhausting heat. By May the grass in the lowlands starts to burn out, so the best window runs roughly from late March to early May. This seven-day route brings together three spring landscapes: the orchards of the valley, mountain slopes with tulips and old cities wrapped in green.
Weather and season
In April, daytime temperatures are usually +18 to +26°C, with cool nights, especially in the mountains. Rain and short thunderstorms happen, so a light waterproof jacket is useful. Blossom timing varies by year: orchards open earlier in a warm spring and later in a cold one. If you are travelling for the tulips, follow local travel groups online, which usually post where flowers have appeared.
If you arrive around 21 March, you will catch Navruz, the spring festival with celebrations and sumalak.
Day-by-day plan
| Day | Route | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tashkent | arrival, parks and squares in bloom |
| 2–3 | Fergana Valley | orchards, Margilan, Rishtan, Kokand |
| 4–5 | Jizzakh and Zaamin | tulips, juniper forests, mountain air |
| 6 | Samarkand | Registan, Shah-i-Zinda |
| 7 | Shahrisabz | Takhtakaracha pass, Ak-Saray |
Day 1. Tashkent
Tashkent is green in spring: chestnut and Judas trees flower and tulips are planted in the squares. In the evening, stroll through the centre and the park near the Minor Mosque.
Days 2–3. The Fergana Valley in bloom
The road to the valley crosses the Kamchik pass, about 320 km and 5–5.5 hours on the Tashkent — Fergana route. Snow can still lie on the pass in early April, while lower down the orchards begin and stretch almost all the way to Fergana.
What to see:
- Margilan, with the Yodgorlik silk factory, where every stage of making atlas and adras fabric is shown.
- Rishtan, with ceramic workshops known for their turquoise glaze.
- Kokand, with Khudayar Khan's palace and the Juma Mosque with its carved columns.
- Orchards around the villages, best seen from the car on minor roads. Do not walk into private orchards uninvited, but if the owner invites you in, accept.
Days 4–5. Tulips and the Jizzakh mountains
Head back towards Tashkent and turn southwest. Jizzakh is about 200 km and 2.5–3 hours from Tashkent on the Tashkent — Jizzakh route. From Jizzakh a road leads into the Zaamin mountains, home to protected juniper forests, and in spring the slopes are covered in flowers.
- Tulips. In April wild tulips grow on the slopes and in the steppe: red, yellow, sometimes two-toned. Many species are in the Red Book, so picking or digging them up is forbidden. Photograph them and leave them be.
- Juniper forests. Trees hundreds of years old are easy to see along the short trails of the national park.
- Where to stay. The Zaamin area has sanatoriums and guesthouses; book ahead, especially for weekends.
Day 6. Samarkand
Samarkand is about 100 km, 1.5–2 hours, from Jizzakh. In spring the city is at its best: the trees around the Registan are in leaf, and daytime temperatures let you walk all day. See the Registan, Gur-e-Amir, Bibi-Khanym and Shah-i-Zinda, and in the evening visit the Siab Bazaar for the first fresh herbs and radishes.
Day 7. Shahrisabz over the pass
The Samarkand — Shahrisabz road crosses the Takhtakaracha pass, about 90 km and 1.5–2 hours. In spring the mountain slopes turn green and poppies bloom in places. In Shahrisabz you will find the ruins of the Ak-Saray palace and the Dorut Tilovat and Dorus Saodat complexes. Snow is possible on the pass in early spring, so check the weather.
Spring food
- Sumalak, a sweet paste of sprouted wheat cooked all night for Navruz.
- Kok samsa, pastry filled with fresh greens, a spring classic.
- Chuchvara and manti with greens, made while the herbs are young.
- The first strawberries, which reach the bazaars in late April and May.
What to pack
- Layers: mornings are cool, afternoons warm.
- A light rain jacket.
- Comfortable shoes for the Zaamin trails.
- Sunscreen, as the spring sun is already strong.
Tips
- Do not pick flowers. Tulips and other rare plants are protected.
- Book accommodation for holidays. Demand is high around Navruz and the May holidays.
- Check the passes. Kamchik and Takhtakaracha are sometimes closed by snow in March and early April.
Getting around
This spring route runs through mountains and villages, so a shared car ride is more convenient than the train. With Yo'ldosh you book a seat with a verified driver and leave when it suits you, which is cheaper than a taxi and more flexible than a timetable. The routes you need are Tashkent — Fergana, Tashkent — Jizzakh and Samarkand — Shahrisabz. Find other rides in the routes section.
