Samarkand to Termez: the Mountain Road via Shahrisabz and Guzar

One of the country's most beautiful drives: the Takhtakaracha pass, the Kashkadarya steppe, the gorges of Surkhandarya and the Iron Gates. Timings and where to stop.

Samarkand to Termez: the Mountain Road via Shahrisabz and Guzar

You can travel from Samarkand to Termez by train, but those who go by car get one of the most beautiful roads in Uzbekistan. In a single day the landscape changes several times: the green foothills of the Zeravshan, the hairpins of the Takhtakaracha pass, the fertile Shahrisabz valley, the tawny Kashkadarya steppe, the rocky gorges of Surkhandarya and finally the hot plain by the Amu Darya. Here is how the road works, how long it takes and where to stop.

Distance and time

The mountain road from Samarkand to Termez is about 360–380 km. Pure driving time is 6–7.5 hours. With stops for lunch, photos and rest, allow a full day of daylight. Going via Qarshi to avoid the pass adds a little distance and offers plainer scenery.

Stages of the road

1. Samarkand to the Takhtakaracha pass to Shahrisabz

Just outside Samarkand the road starts climbing into the Zeravshan range. The Takhtakaracha pass is around 1,700 m above sea level. The road is narrow with tight bends, but in good weather it is perfectly manageable. On the way up there are places to pull over and look down at the valley, and vendors sell fruit, honey and kurt, the local dried cheese.

After the descent you reach the valley of Kitab and Shahrisabz: about 90 km and roughly two hours. If you only want this stretch and plan to stay in Shahrisabz, see the Samarkand — Shahrisabz trips.

In winter and early spring the pass may close because of snow and ice. Drivers then go around through the steppe, which takes longer but is more reliable.

2. Shahrisabz to Guzar

From Shahrisabz the road heads south-west to Guzar, a small town where the roads to Qarshi and Termez split. It is about 70 km across plains and foothills, roughly an hour. Guzar is a good place to refuel and eat, as services become scarce in the mountains ahead.

3. Guzar to Derbent and the Iron Gates

The most impressive part of the trip. The road climbs into the spurs of the Gissar range and passes through the Derbent area. Here lies the gorge known as the Iron Gates, a narrow passage through the rocks that served since ancient times as the route between Sogdiana and Bactria. The landscape is stark and beautiful: red and grey cliffs, dry slopes and scattered villages.

Do not stop on narrow stretches; use proper lay-bys or wide shoulders only.

4. Boysun to Sherabad to Termez

Next the road passes through Boysun district, known for its culture: the traditions, songs and rituals of this area are on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. Then comes the descent to Sherabad and out onto the plain. The last 60–70 km to Termez cross a hot valley where summer temperatures can exceed 40 °C.

How to travel

Your own car or a taxi

If you are driving, respect the mountain nature of the road: check the brakes, engine cooling and tyres, and carry water for yourself and the radiator. Driving the mountain stretches at night is not recommended.

Shared ride

If you would rather not drive the hairpins yourself, you can travel with a driver who knows the road well and is heading south anyway. On Yo'ldosh drivers post Samarkand — Termez trips with a departure time and price per seat; drivers are verified and you can see their profile. It is cheaper than a whole taxi, and you leave at a convenient time.

Train

If the mountain road is not the point and you simply need to get there, there is a train. It takes longer and follows a different line, but spares you the heat and the hairpins. Check the timetable in advance.

Checkpoints and documents

There are checkpoints at the entry to Kashkadarya and especially Surkhandarya. Documents are checked for both driver and passengers, so keep your passport handy. Foreigners should also carry their registration. Do not photograph checkpoints or border facilities.

Travel tips

  1. Start early. Leaving at 6–7 am lets you cross the pass in the morning cool and reach Termez before the evening heat.
  2. Best seasons are April–May and September–October: green slopes in spring and gentler heat in autumn.
  3. Water and food. Shops are scarce in the mountains, so bring water, bread and fruit.
  4. Motion sickness. Hairpins do not suit everyone, so sit in front and take breaks.
  5. Coverage. There may be no signal in the gorges, so download offline maps.

The bottom line

Samarkand to Termez is 6–7 hours of mountain road that is worth the trip in itself: the pass, Shahrisabz, the Iron Gates and Boysun.
