Shared Rides with Kids: Car Seats and Stops

How to find a driver with a child seat, how many stops to plan and what to pack for your child so the journey goes smoothly.

Shared Rides with Kids: Car Seats and Stops

A car trip with a child needs a bit more preparation than travelling alone, but it is entirely doable and convenient. The main things: think through safety, agree with the driver and plan stops in advance. Here is how to make the trip comfortable for the whole family, whether it is Tashkent — Samarkand or the shorter Tashkent — Jizzakh.

Safety first

Separate rules apply to children in cars, and they are not there for formality. A child must ride in a restraint suited to their height and weight: a car seat, a booster or a belt adapter, depending on age. An adult seat belt is designed for an adult and without a proper seat may not protect a small child.

Rules and requirements for carrying children change, so check them in current sources. In any case, safe carriage of a child is not up for negotiation: if there is no suitable seat, it is better to choose another way to travel.

How to find a driver with a child seat

  1. Check the trip description. Many drivers state whether they have a child seat or booster.
  2. Message the driver in advance. Give the child's age and weight and ask whether the seat they have is suitable.
  3. Bring your own seat. The most reliable option is to bring your usual seat. Ask the driver whether it will fit and how to secure it.
  4. Show how it fits. If the seat is yours, you know how to install it and will do it faster and more correctly.
  5. Book the right number of seats. The seat and the child take up space, so account for this when booking.

If the driver is hesitant or there is no seat, do not persuade or take risks: choose another trip.

How many stops to plan

With a child, comfort outranks speed. As a guideline:

  • stop every hour and a half to two hours to stretch, use the toilet and get fresh air;
  • with toddlers under three, more often, roughly hourly, especially if you need to feed or change them;
  • for older children a stop every two hours is enough, but do not delay if the child asks;
  • on hot routes, drink water and step into the shade.

Agree such stops with the driver in advance: they are usually understanding. In the trip description you can check whether they are willing to stop more often, and remind them in chat before departure.

What to pack for your child

  • water and a light snack: fruit, biscuits, dried fruit, bread without crumbly extras;
  • tissues, wet wipes, rubbish bags;
  • a change of clothes and nappies if needed;
  • a favourite toy, a book or a tablet with cartoons downloaded (the internet drops out on the highway);
  • a blanket or light cardigan, since the air conditioning runs in the car;
  • motion sickness remedy on a doctor's advice, and bags in case of nausea;
  • sun shades for the windows.

Sleep schedule and activities on the road

If possible, plan departure so that the long part of the journey falls during your child's nap. For toddlers it is the easiest way to pass the time. For older children, screen-free games help: "spot a red car", riddles, songs, audio stories. Let your child look out of the window, especially at sights new to them: mountains, camels, cotton fields.

Rules for the adults

  • buckle up your child and yourself;
  • do not hold a baby in your arms while the car is moving: it is dangerous;
  • do not leave a child alone in the car during a stop;
  • make sure children do not lean out of windows or play with door handles.

Agree in advance

In the Yo'ldosh chat, tell the driver you are travelling with a child, their age, the number of bags and whether you have a seat. Discuss the pickup point beforehand: it is easier when it is near home and without a long walk with a pushchair. It is better to fold the pushchair and put it in the boot, so warn about its dimensions. For more on luggage, see our article about things in a shared car.

All directions are collected on the all routes page, with useful information for passengers on the for passengers page. A prepared trip turns into a pleasant family adventure.
