The Baysun Mountains: Trails, Villages and Gorges

Walking and driving routes around Baysun, the best time of year, mountain villages with living traditions and tips on where to stay.

The Baysun Mountains: Trails, Villages and Gorges

The Baysun mountains lie in the south-west of the Hissar range, in the Surkhandarya region. It is one of the most distinctive areas of Uzbekistan: ancient rites, folk festivals, crafts and songs survive here, and UNESCO has listed them as intangible heritage. For a traveller, Baysun is a blend of nature and culture where you can walk, stay overnight in villages and listen to local people sing. Here is how it all works.

Where it is

The town of Baysun lies in the foothills, roughly two to three hours by road from Termez and closer to Denau. Route description: Termez — Baysun. The road crosses plain and then climbs into foothills where green slopes open up. In spring they are covered in flowers, in summer they burn to a golden shade, and in autumn they change colour. The town itself has a bazaar, teahouses and small museums, and trails begin around it.

Mountain villages

Around Baysun are villages where traditional life persists. Houses are built of stone and clay, vegetable plots and orchards run along the slopes, and each yard has its own sheep and goats. Guests are received gladly: offered tandoor bread, honey and fruit, and shown crafts. Among the known places are Machay and Sairob, where tourists come for an ethnographic experience. Conditions in the villages are simple, but the hospitality is sincere. Arrange a night in advance and find out what the price includes.

Walking routes

  1. Walks around a village. Trails among orchards, springs and pastures, an hour or two, suitable for everyone.
  2. Day crossings. Routes between villages or to viewpoints, five to seven hours with an ascent.
  3. Multi-day hikes. For prepared hikers, with overnight stays in villages or in tents. Better with a local guide.

Trails are not marked everywhere, so someone who knows the way is needed even on easy sections. Local guides know the springs, safe crossings and the most beautiful spots.

Gorges and nature

The mountain gorges around Baysun are famed for reddish and grey rocks, juniper groves and walnut forests. Rivers and streams are fed by snow and rain, so they run full in spring. Here you can see mountain birds and, with luck, tracks of wild animals. The area also has ancient caves and prehistoric camp sites, but they are best visited with a guide and by permission.

Traditions and festivals

Baysun is known for its spring festival, when people gather on the slopes to sing, dance and hold contests. The spring equinox, Navruz, is celebrated especially vividly. Tourists often time their arrival for it to see national games and hear old songs. If your trip coincides with the festival, allow more time and book lodging in advance, because many people want to come.

Best time of year

  • Spring (March to May). Greenery, flowers, festivals, moderate warmth. The best season.
  • Summer. Hot below, but cooler in the mountains. Plan walks for morning and evening.
  • Autumn. Quiet, warm, golden slopes, with nuts and fruit ripening.
  • Winter. Cold, with possible snow and roads sometimes closed.

Where to stay

The town of Baysun has small hotels and guesthouses. In the villages you can stay with families. Conditions vary, but usually these are simple rooms with mattresses and shared facilities. Check availability before you leave; prices are approximate and depend on the season.

What to bring

  • Sturdy closed shoes for trails.
  • Layered clothing and a warm jacket for the evening.
  • Water and a snack: shops are few in the mountains.
  • Sunscreen and a hat.
  • A torch, especially if you stay overnight.
  • Cash, since there are no terminals in the villages.
  • Small gifts or sweets for hosts.
  • An offline map: coverage disappears.

Rules and etiquette

In villages dress modestly, and women should carry a headscarf. Remove your shoes on entering a house. Ask permission before photographing people and their homes. Accept hospitality with gratitude. Do not leave rubbish, pick plants or light fires outside designated places. Respect for hosts and nature makes the trip pleasant for everyone.

Getting there without a car

Buses and minibuses run to Baysun from Denau and Termez, and beyond that you can reach villages with local drivers. A shared ride suits part of the way. On Yo'ldosh you can find a driver heading along the Termez and Baysun route and book a seat. You pay only for your seat, so it is cheaper than hiring a car. For trips into the mountains, arrange in advance, including the return.

Practical tips

Plan the trip for two or three days so as not to hurry. Check the forecast and road conditions. Prices for lodging, food, guide services and transport are approximate and best confirmed when booking.
