Qarshi to Tashkent: Train, Car and Shared Rides

The trip back from Kashkadarya to the capital: where cars to Tashkent gather in Qarshi, when to book train tickets and how to avoid overpaying at holiday time.

Qarshi to Tashkent: Train, Car and Shared Rides

Hundreds of people travel from Qarshi to Tashkent every day: students, people who work in the capital, business travellers and families returning from visiting relatives. Demand jumps around a lot. On an ordinary Tuesday it is easy to leave, but on the last day of a holiday seats on trains and in cars vanish within hours and prices at the station climb. Here is how to get back to the capital comfortably and without overpaying.

Train: when to buy tickets

The high-speed train from Qarshi to Tashkent is the fastest overland option: it passes through Samarkand and reaches the capital in 3.5–4 hours. But seats are limited.

The rules are simple:

  • on ordinary weekdays you can buy a few days ahead;
  • for Sunday evening and Monday morning, a week or more ahead;
  • before Navruz, the Eid holidays, New Year and at the end of summer break, as soon as sales open.

If the high-speed train is full, check regular and overnight trains. They are slower, but tickets often remain available longer.

Where cars to Tashkent gather in Qarshi

Traditionally, cars to the capital gather near Qarshi bus station and the railway station, as well as at the city exits towards Samarkand. Drivers often try to leave early in the morning so they reach Tashkent by evening, but cars also leave throughout the day as they fill up.

What you should know:

  • The price at the station is not fixed. The driver names it, and at holiday time it can be noticeably higher than usual. Confirm the amount before getting in, and feel free to ask other passengers.
  • The departure time is not known in advance. The car leaves when it is full. In the morning this is quick; during the day the wait can drag on.
  • The route may vary. Most go via Jam and Samarkand, but some prefer the road via Shahrisabz and the pass, which takes longer.

Shared rides: no need to depend on the station

A convenient alternative is to book a seat in advance with a driver who is going to Tashkent anyway. On Yo'ldosh you see the departure time, price per seat and driver profile, and drivers are verified. The price is set in advance and does not change when you get in, which matters especially at holiday time. Trips are on the Qarshi — Tashkent page.

Booking tips:

  1. Around holidays, book 2–3 days ahead rather than the evening before.
  2. Agree on the pickup point straight away: the station, a bus stop or your home.
  3. Tell the driver about luggage, as people often bring produce, fruit and home-made preserves from Kashkadarya.
  4. If there are two or three of you, book your seats at the same time.

How not to overpay at holiday time

The most expensive days are the last few before a holiday, when everyone goes home, and the last few after it, when everyone returns to the capital. What helps:

  • shift your trip by a day. Leaving a day before or after the peak often means normal prices and free seats;
  • leave in the morning. On peak days evening cars cost more and take longer to fill;
  • book in advance. The price in the app is known before the trip, while at the station on a holiday it is set by demand;
  • consider a combination. A car to Samarkand and the high-speed train from there can be faster and cheaper than hunting for a direct car.

By car: what to expect

The drive from Qarshi to Tashkent takes 6–7 hours. The first 2–2.5 hours cross the steppe to Samarkand via Jam: a flat road with few towns, very hot in summer. Then 4–4.5 hours on the M39 via Jizzakh and Syrdarya. Checkpoints when leaving Kashkadarya and entering Tashkent check documents, so keep your passport on you.

Stops: many drivers take a break in Samarkand or on the highway near Jizzakh for lunch and a stretch.

Useful tips

  • In summer leave early, as a car without air conditioning is hard going after noon.
  • Bring water, as there are few shops on the steppe stretch to Samarkand.
  • If you arrive in Tashkent late, agree with the driver on a drop-off point near a metro station.
  • Save the driver's contact so it is easier to recover anything you leave in the car.

The bottom line

The fastest way from Qarshi to Tashkent is the high-speed train, and the most flexible is by car. At holiday time the key is to avoid the peak day and book in advance so you are not at the mercy of station prices. Fresh trips to the capital are on the Qarshi — Tashkent page.
