Qarshi to Muborak: the road to Kashkadarya's gas capital

Muborak is known for its gas processing plant and shift-work rhythm of life. How people travel between Qarshi and Muborak, how long the road takes and how it differs from tourist routes.

Qarshi to Muborak: the road to Kashkadarya's gas capital

Muborak is a town in the Kashkadarya region that Uzbekistan knows above all for its gas industry. A large gas processing plant works here, and the town itself grew up around it, so the rhythm of life is unusual: many visiting specialists, shift workers and daily commuters. The regional centre Qarshi is linked to Muborak by a busy road used by shift workers, locals and business travellers alike.

Distance and travel time

It is about 100 to 120 kilometres from Qarshi to Muborak along a flat highway. On average the drive takes an hour and a half to two hours by car if there are no delays. The road crosses a semi-desert landscape of fields, stretches of steppe and small settlements. It is not a scenic mountain road but a working route where convenience and predictability matter.

In summer Kashkadarya is very hot, so daytime trips are tiring, especially without air conditioning. In winter fog and wind are possible, but serious complications are unusual.

How shift workers and locals travel

Traffic on this route is largely set by shifts at the plant. People come home at the end of a rotation and leave at the start of a new one, so on certain days of the week trips fill up. That means popular trips are best booked in advance, especially on changeover days.

Typical ways to get there:

  • Buses and minibuses: inexpensive and running through the day, but departure depends on the cabin filling and stops on the way add time;
  • Company buses: employers organise transport for their staff, but such trips are usually not available to outsiders;
  • Taxi: a fast and comfortable way, but the cost is higher than other options;
  • Shared rides: drivers who regularly travel between Qarshi and Muborak take passengers.

Shared rides between Qarshi and Muborak

For those who travel constantly, this is often the best-value choice. The driver goes about their own business and splits fuel costs; you book a seat in the Yo'ldosh app, see the driver's profile and the departure time, and pay only for your seat. This is clearly cheaper than a taxi for the whole car and more flexible than a minibus timetable. See the trips here: Qarshi to Muborak and the other direction Muborak to Qarshi.

What to watch when choosing a trip:

  1. Departure time and meeting point: agree in advance, especially if you are meeting in an industrial area.
  2. Luggage: shift workers often travel with large bags, so warn the driver.
  3. Driver reviews: the app shows them before booking.
  4. The return trip: if you are going for a day, find an evening trip home straight away.

What you will see in Muborak

Muborak is not a tourist town and you should not expect ancient monuments. But you will see modern, industrial Kashkadarya:

  • a large gas processing complex visible from afar (visits are closed to outsiders, and you should not photograph facilities without permission);
  • residential districts built for the plant's employees;
  • the city bazaar with local vegetables, fruit and meat.

If you came on business, rely on practicality. If you came out of curiosity, remember that industrial territory is guarded and the rules must be respected.

Practical tips

  • Bring your passport: it may be needed to enter an enterprise's territory or at checks on the highway.
  • In the heat, stock up on water and a hat.
  • Cash is useful, because small shops and canteens do not always take cards.
  • Plan the journey so that you are not on the highway in the dark: lighting is modest on some stretches.
  • If you go further, to Bukhara or Kasan, check the timetable in advance: trips in those directions are less frequent.

Where to go next

From Muborak you can continue towards Bukhara, or return through Qarshi to Shahrisabz and Samarkand. If you have a day, think about a trip to Shahrisabz, Timur's birthplace: it is in the same region and gives a good contrast to industrial Muborak. All directions are in all routes.

Plan your trip
