Khanabad: cool foothills in the east of the Andijan region

A small town by the Kyrgyz border where Andijan people go in summer to escape the heat: foothills, the Andijan reservoir, springs, a bazaar and how to get there.

Khanabad: cool foothills in the east of the Andijan region

In July Andijan is hot: afternoon temperatures easily climb above 35°C, and at night the city never quite cools down. That is when many families remember Khanabad, a small town at the far eastern edge of the region at the foot of the mountains. It is noticeably cooler here, a large reservoir lies nearby, and in the foothills you can find shade, springs and tapchan platforms over the water. Here is what makes Khanabad appealing and how to plan a trip.

Where Khanabad is

Khanabad lies in the east of the Andijan region, about 40–50 km from Andijan. The drive takes around an hour. The town stands where the Karadarya river leaves the mountains, close to the border with Kyrgyzstan. Behind it rise the spurs of the Fergana range, and orchards, fields and villages line the river.

The elevation here is slightly higher than in the centre of the valley, and the closeness of mountains and water makes the climate milder: summer evenings are noticeably cooler than in Andijan. A difference of a few degrees sounds small, but after a stuffy day in the city you feel it at once: here you can sleep without air conditioning, and in the morning the air is fresh and smells of orchards.

The Andijan reservoir

The district's main natural landmark is the Andijan reservoir on the Karadarya. It was built in Soviet times to irrigate the valley, and its dam became one of the largest hydraulic structures in the region. The reservoir is surrounded by hills and mountains, and the view of the water from the surrounding heights is impressive.

What you need to know:

  • The dam and its facilities are secure sites. You may not photograph them or go near them.
  • Part of the reservoir lies along the state border. Do not enter border zones and respect all restrictions.
  • Swimming in the reservoir is unsafe: it is deep, the banks are steep and the water is cold. For time by the water, choose spots on rivers and canals that locals know.

Foothills and springs

There are many places around Khanabad where Andijan residents go for a day or a weekend:

  1. The banks of the Karadarya and canals. Shady spots by the water with tapchans and teahouses, where in summer whole families drink tea, cook plov and relax.
  2. Foothill villages. Lanes with orchards, vineyards and springs. Locals value spring water and will gladly show you where it is cleanest.
  3. The hills. In spring the slopes are covered with grass and flowers, a good time for short walks and photos.

Do not go far into the mountains without a guide, as the border is close and some paths lead into border zones. Never light fires on dry grass, and take your rubbish with you.

The town and its bazaar

Khanabad is a compact town with a main street, a park, schools and a bazaar. The bazaar is worth an hour:

  • Fruit from the foothill orchards: cherries, apricots, apples and peaches.
  • Honey: there are apiaries in the foothills.
  • Dairy products: katyk yoghurt, suzma curd and kaymak cream.
  • Bread: hot flatbread straight from the tandoor.

What to eat

Andijan cooking is hearty and generous. In Khanabad, try:

  1. Andijan plov with yellow carrots and chickpeas.
  2. Shashlik: by the water it is cooked on almost every tapchan.
  3. Shurpa: especially in the evening when it gets cooler.
  4. Kuk samsa: samsa filled with greens, especially popular in spring.
  5. Fruit: local apricots and cherries in June are famous throughout the valley.

When to go

  • April to May: blossom, green slopes and comfortable weather.
  • June to August: the main season, when Andijan people come here to escape the heat. Weekends are crowded, so weekdays are better.
  • September to October: fruit harvest, mild weather and few people.
  • Winter: cold, sometimes snowy; not the best time for outdoor breaks.

How to get there

Minibuses and taxis run from Andijan to Khanabad, and on the Andijan – Khanabad route drivers post shared rides on Yo'ldosh. This is convenient if you are going for the day and want to come back in the evening without hunting for a car: you book a seat in the app and pay only for yourself. The road from Tashkent to Andijan over the Kamchik pass takes roughly 5–6 hours, so if you are coming from the capital it makes sense to spend the night in Andijan and set off for Khanabad in the morning.

Practical tips

  • Bring a light sweater: evenings in the foothills are cool even in July.
  • Mosquito repellent is useful by the water.
  • You will need cash in teahouses, at the bazaar and for renting a tapchan.
  • Do not photograph the dam, border signs or military installations.
  • If you are with children, watch them near the water, as mountain rivers have strong currents.

Who will enjoy Khanabad

Khanabad suits people who want to escape the valley's summer heat without going far, and travellers curious about life in small towns at the foot of the mountains. There are no headline sights here, but there is coolness, water, orchards and hospitality.

If you are planning a trip, check rides on the Andijan – Khanabad route, and find other connections around the valley under all routes.
