Shahrisabz to Qarshi: a Short Hop Across Kashkadarya
The daily connection between the two main towns of Kashkadarya: minibuses, taxis, shared rides, travel time and how to pick the option that suits your plans.

Shahrisabz and Qarshi are the two main towns of Kashkadarya. Qarshi is the administrative and business centre with a railway station and airport; Shahrisabz is the historic town at the foot of the mountains and the birthplace of Amir Timur. People travel between them constantly: to work and study, to hospitals and government offices, to bazaars and to visit relatives. Tourists use this link too, for example arriving in Qarshi by plane or train and continuing to Shahrisabz. Here is how this short trip works.
Distance and time
- Distance: about 90–100 km.
- Travel time: 1 hour 20 minutes to an hour and a half by car.
- Terrain: flat, with no passes or hairpins.
The road follows the valley of the Kashkadarya river through rural districts of wheat and cotton fields, orchards and villages. It is one of the simplest and most predictable roads in the region: open all year, with problems in winter only in fog.
In the other direction, from Qarshi to Shahrisabz, the time is the same. As you approach Shahrisabz the mountains grow clearer on the horizon, especially beautiful in spring when snow still lies on the peaks.
Transport options
Minibuses and buses
Intercity minibuses and buses run from the bus stations of both towns throughout the day. This is the cheapest way, but they stop in district centres and villages, so the trip can stretch to two hours. They leave when full or on a schedule that is best checked locally.
Shared taxis
The classic option: cars gather at bus stations and markets and leave once all seats are filled. Faster than a minibus; agree on the price before you get in.
Shared rides
If you need to leave at a particular time, say to catch a train in Qarshi or make a meeting in Shahrisabz, booking a seat in advance is convenient. On Yo'ldosh, drivers who travel between the towns anyway post trips with a departure time and price per seat; drivers are verified and you see their profile in advance. Trips are on the Shahrisabz — Qarshi and Qarshi — Shahrisabz pages.
Taxi
A whole taxi is the fastest and most flexible option, especially for three or four people. Agree on the price in advance; it is roughly the cost of four seats in a car.
Comparison
| Option | Time | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minibus | 1.5–2 h | lowest price | stops, waiting |
| Shared taxi | 1.5 h | faster than a minibus | unknown departure time |
| Shared ride | 1.5 h | time and price known in advance | needs booking |
| Taxi | 1.3–1.5 h | full flexibility | most expensive |
Prices change with fuel and the season, so think in proportions and check amounts before travelling.
Which option suits whom
- Students and regular commuters: minibus or shared ride, cheap and predictable.
- Those heading to a train or flight: a shared ride or taxi with at least 30–40 minutes to spare.
- Tourists with luggage: a shared ride or taxi to the hotel.
- Families with children: a taxi or shared ride, to avoid waiting at the station.
Connecting with trains and flights
Qarshi is the region's main transport hub, with high-speed trains from Tashkent and Samarkand and domestic flights. That is why many people reach Shahrisabz via Qarshi.
Tips:
- If your train arrives in the evening, book your ride to Shahrisabz in advance, as there are fewer cars late at night.
- If you are leaving Shahrisabz for a morning train, allow extra time: district towns have morning traffic, and there are checkpoints entering Qarshi.
- Agree on the drop-off point with the driver: the station, the airport or a specific address.
What to see in each town
Shahrisabz
- Ak-Saray, the ruins of the portal of Timur's palace;
- Dorut Tilovat with the Kok Gumbaz mosque;
- Dorus Saodat with the mausoleum of Jahangir.
The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Qarshi
- the 16th-century Odina and Kok Gumbaz mosques;
- the Bekmir madrasa;
- the old brick bridge over the Kashkadarya;
- a big bazaar with local flatbread and fruit.
Practical tips
- Kashkadarya is hot in summer, so travel in the morning or evening.
- Keep your passport with you, as there are checkpoints at town entrances.
- Cash is useful at the bazaar and on minibuses.
- If you are carrying bazaar shopping, tell the driver about your luggage.
The bottom line
Shahrisabz to Qarshi is a simple, short trip: about 90–100 km across the plain in an hour and a half.
