Bukhara in One Day: What to See Between Trains
A compact route through the old town for those who arrive on a morning train and leave in the evening. What to see, how much time to allow and how to get in from the station.

Bukhara is a museum city whose old centre is so compact that you can realistically see the main monuments in one day. If you arrive on a morning train and leave on an evening one, a good plan helps you avoid losing track of time. Here is how to organise it.
Logistics: the station and the old town
Bukhara's main railway station is in the town of Kogon (Kagan), about 10 to 15 kilometres from the old town. This matters: from the station to the centre you need a taxi, bus or minibus, and the ride takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Do not forget to add this time when calculating your return.
Check train times in advance. Luggage can be left at a hotel, guesthouse or a left-luggage room if one is open. That way you walk light.
The plan for the day
9:00: Lyabi-Hauz
Start at the Lyabi-Hauz square: an old pond surrounded by a madrasa and khanaka, with teahouses under mulberry trees. In the morning it is calm and cool. Have tea, look around and take photos. Allow about 45 minutes.
10:00: the trading domes
Walk through the trading domes: Toki Zargaron, Toki Telpak Furushon and Toki Sarrafon. Under the covered vaults jewellery and headwear were once sold and money changed. Today they hold souvenir shops. Look, but do not buy immediately: compare prices. Allow about 45 minutes.
11:00: the Kalon complex
Bukhara's main ensemble includes the Kalon Minaret and the Kalon Mosque, with the Mir-i-Arab Madrasa beside it. The Kalon Minaret, about 46 metres tall, long served as a beacon for caravans. The visit takes about an hour. The mosque and madrasa are active, so keep quiet and modest.
12:30: the Ark
The Ark fortress is the ancient citadel of Bukhara's rulers. Inside are museums, and the walls offer views of the city. The visit takes about an hour.
13:30: lunch
Have lunch at a teahouse: plov, lagman, shashlik and green tea. Rest in the shade. Bukharan cuisine is known for its samsa and special flatbreads.
15:00: the Ismail Samani Mausoleum
The Ismail Samani Mausoleum sits in a shady park and is considered one of the oldest and most refined monuments of the city. The brickwork creates astonishing patterns. Allow about 30 to 40 minutes.
16:00: Chashma-Ayub
The Chashma-Ayub mausoleum-spring, where according to legend the prophet Job struck the ground with his staff and water flowed. A small but interesting site next to Ismail Samani.
17:00: Chor-Minor
Chor-Minor is a madrasa with four towers, unlike any other monument in the city. It lies slightly off to the side, but is worth the walk. Allow about 30 minutes.
18:00: dinner and the station
Dinner in town, then the trip to the station. Note that the road takes 20 to 30 minutes, and it is best to be at the station 30 to 40 minutes before departure. If your train is late in the evening, you can stay for an evening stroll.

If time is even shorter
Keep the essentials:
- Lyabi-Hauz.
- The Kalon complex.
- The Ark.
- The Ismail Samani Mausoleum.
This is enough to get a sense of the city. The rest can be skipped or left for next time.
Practical tips
- Shoes comfortable and closed, clothing modest.
- In summer start early: it gets hot by noon. Carry water and a hat.
- Buy tickets on the spot; check prices and opening hours in advance.
- Do not waste time in queues: choose less popular hours.
- The old town is easy to explore on foot: distances are small.
Getting there
Many travellers combine Bukhara with Samarkand. The road between the cities takes about 3.5 to 4 hours, and for those who do not want to depend on train schedules, shared rides work well. On the Samarkand — Bukhara page drivers post trips, and from the station in Kogon to central Bukhara you can travel on the Bukhara — Kogon route. Agree on the time in advance. You book a seat in the Yo'ldosh app, drivers are verified, and the price is usually lower than a taxi. Other directions are collected on the all routes page.
The takeaway
Bukhara in one day is a full but doable programme. The main thing is to choose your timing well, leave a margin for the trip to the station and not try to see everything. If you find you want to stay, that is fine: add another day, and the city will open up quite differently.
