Chirchik: A Town at the Foot of the Mountains

Many people drive through Chirchik on the way to the mountains, but the town has its own history, river and bazaar. It is also a handy starting point for Chimgan, Charvak and Ugam.

Chirchik: A Town at the Foot of the Mountains

Head northeast from Tashkent toward the mountains and, after about forty minutes, the road passes through Chirchik. Many people see it as a suburb to hurry through on the way to Chimgan. But Chirchik is a town in its own right, with its own history, river, parks and bazaar. It is also the most convenient starting point for trips into the Western Tien Shan: the Charvak Reservoir, Chimgan and the valleys of Ugam-Chatkal National Park are all close by. Here is what to see in town and how to organize trips into the mountains.

A little history

Chirchik grew up in the 1930s around major industrial projects: an electrochemical plant and a cascade of hydroelectric stations on the Chirchik River. It received town status in 1935 and quickly became one of the republic's industrial centers. Factories, colleges and military schools followed.

The town takes its name from the Chirchik River, the main waterway of the Tashkent oasis, which rises in the mountains near Charvak and feeds the capital's canals.

What to see in town

Chirchik makes no claim to be a tourist capital, but a couple of hours here are pleasant:

  • The Chirchik riverfront. A fast mountain river with cold water, good for a walk and photos with the mountains behind.
  • The central park. Old trees, alleys, playgrounds and cafes; it gets busy in the evening.
  • 1930s–50s architecture. The center keeps buildings from the town's founding era, with columns and decorative moldings.
  • The bazaar. Fresh vegetables and fruit from foothill orchards, dairy, honey and dried fruit. A great place to stock up before heading into the mountains.
  • Mountain views. On clear days the peaks of the Chatkal and Pskem ranges rise above the town.

Note that there are military facilities in town. Do not photograph them or any restricted areas; it is forbidden.

Getting there

Chirchik is one of the closest towns to Tashkent: about 35 km, a 40–60 minute drive depending on traffic.

Rides on the Tashkent — Chirchik route run all day, as many people commute for work and study. To return to the capital, use the Chirchik — Tashkent route. There are also suburban trains, but their timetable is not always convenient.

Why Chirchik makes a good starting point

From Tashkent, the road to the mountains runs through Chirchik and Gazalkent and then along the Charvak Reservoir. Starting here is handy because:

  1. You can buy food and water at town prices.
  2. It is closer to the mountains than the capital, so you gain an hour in the morning.
  3. The town has fuel stations, ATMs and pharmacies.

Where to go from Chirchik

The Charvak Reservoir

A large artificial lake surrounded by mountains, about 40 km from Chirchik. In summer people swim, rent pedal boats and relax at holiday resorts and guesthouses. The water is cold even in July, and the view of the turquoise surface against the mountains is one of the region's signature sights.

Chimgan

A mountain resort at the foot of Big Chimgan (about 3,300 m). In winter there is skiing and snowboarding; in summer, trekking, horseback riding and fresh air. Chairlifts run seasonally, so check in advance.

Ugam-Chatkal National Park

A vast protected area with gorges, rivers, waterfalls and juniper forests. Popular destinations include Beldersay and the Koksu and Pskem river valleys. Some areas have park rules to follow, and border zones require special permits, so check ahead.
