How to Buy Train Tickets in Uzbekistan Online: Step by Step

A step-by-step guide to buying on the railway's website and app, paying with a foreign card, refunds and what to do if there are no tickets.

How to Buy Train Tickets in Uzbekistan Online: Step by Step

The train is one of the most convenient ways to travel between Uzbekistan's major cities: fast, predictable and free of traffic. But to board the right train you need a ticket, preferably bought ahead. Today you can do it online. Below is a general step-by-step guide. Interfaces, rules and payment methods change, so go by the current version of the official website and app.

Where to buy

Tickets are sold in several ways:

  • The railway's official website (railway.uz). The main and most reliable way.
  • The railway's official mobile app. Convenient, with the ticket always at hand.
  • Station ticket offices. Reliable, especially if online did not work, but queues are possible.
  • Aggregators and travel agencies. They charge a fee but can help with payment and complex itineraries.

It is best to use official resources. Beware of lookalike sites and people at the station offering "tickets by hand": prices are inflated and the ticket may be invalid.

When sales open

Ticket sales open in advance. Usually the period is about 45 days before departure, but it may differ for various trains and may change. For popular directions and holidays tickets sell out weeks ahead, so do not delay. Demand for high-speed trains is especially high.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Open the official site or app. Choose the interface language (Russian, Uzbek, English).
  2. Register or log in. You may need an email, phone number and password. Enter your data only on the official site.
  3. Choose the route and date. Specify the departure and arrival stations, date and number of passengers.
  4. Choose a train. Look at the timetable, journey time, train type and carriage classes.
  5. Choose a carriage and seat. If the system allows, pick a window seat or seats next to your companions.
  6. Enter passenger details. Type the name exactly as in the passport, in Latin or Cyrillic as the system requires, and give the document number. A mistake may lead to refusal of boarding.
  7. Pay. Choose a payment method. Confirm the payment.
  8. Receive the ticket. The e-ticket arrives by email or is available in your account. Save it on your phone and, if possible, print it.

Paying with a foreign card

This is one of the main questions for tourists. Payment options depend on the payment system, the site's settings and the bank that issued the card. At different times international cards have been accepted and at other times not, so there is no guarantee. What you can do:

  • Try paying with your card. The simplest way if it works.
  • Use a local card or app, if you have access (for example through friends or your host).
  • Buy the ticket at the station ticket office for cash.
  • Buy through a travel agency or hotel. They can issue a ticket for a small fee.
  • Ask a local friend or guesthouse owner to help with the purchase.

Before the trip check the capabilities of the site and your card. Buy with time to spare so you can switch options.

What you need to board

  1. Passport. Mandatory, the same document you gave when buying.
  2. E-ticket. Show it on your phone or as a printout. In some cases the passport alone is enough.
  3. Arrive at the station early. At least 30 to 40 minutes before departure: stations have checks and screening.

Check the platform and carriage number on the board.

Refunds and exchanges

A ticket refund is possible under the carrier's rules. The amount withheld depends on the time left before departure and the ticket type. The later you return it, the more may be withheld. Check the conditions and deadlines when buying and on the site. It is better to process a refund early and through the same channel where you bought. If you miss the train, a refund can be difficult, so do not be late.

Classes and carriages

Different trains have their own classes. High-speed trains usually have economy, business and higher classes with more comfort. Passenger trains have open-plan sleeper, compartment and more comfortable options. For the difference, read articles on specific trains. When choosing, look at duration, time of day and price.

If there are no tickets

This is a common situation, especially on holidays and weekends. What you can do:

  1. Choose another time or day. Sometimes tickets are missing only for prime time.
  2. Check the site periodically. Tickets get returned.
  3. Consider another train. A passenger train instead of a high-speed one, or vice versa.
  4. Use an alternative. A bus or a shared ride by car.

If there are no train tickets for your route, for example Tashkent to Samarkand, you can book a seat in a shared car in the Yo'ldosh app: the driver publishes the trip in advance, you choose a time and see a verified profile. The distance is about 300 km and the road takes 3.5 to 4 hours. The same goes for the long Tashkent to Bukhara route: about 600 km, and if the train is full, travelling by car is also an option.

Practical tips

  • Buy tickets as early as possible, especially for holidays, weekends and summer.
  • Compare prices and journey times of different trains.
  • Save the ticket in several places: on your phone, in email, as a printout.
  • Arrive at the station early and keep your passport at hand.
  • Check the name on the ticket: it must match the document.
  • Do not buy tickets from random people.
  • Learn the luggage rules.

Bottom line

Buying a train ticket online in Uzbekistan is simple: the official site or app, exact passport details, payment and an e-ticket. If you cannot pay with a foreign card, a ticket office, an agency or your hosts can help. And when there are no tickets, a car ride remains, for example on the Tashkent to Samarkand and Tashkent to Bukhara routes.
