Samarkand and Shahrisabz in One Day

A day trip over the Takhtakaracha Pass: timing, stops and getting back for dinner. What to fit into Tamerlane's hometown and how not to wear yourself out.

Samarkand and Shahrisabz in One Day

Shahrisabz is the birthplace of Amir Timur, about 80 to 90 kilometres south of Samarkand. The name translates as "green city", and against the backdrop of the Hissar range it does look like a green oasis. For those staying in Samarkand, a day trip to Shahrisabz is a great way to see another side of Tamerlane's era.

What to know about the trip

  • Distance. About 80 to 90 kilometres from Samarkand; the drive takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way.
  • The road. The route crosses the Takhtakaracha mountain pass, whose switchbacks are beautiful but require attention. The road is in good condition, but traffic is slower on climbs and descents.
  • Weather. In summer the pass is cooler than the city, while winter brings snow and ice. Check conditions before leaving.
  • Timing. Check opening hours of monuments in advance, as they can change.

The plan for the day

7:30: leaving Samarkand

The earlier you leave, the more time you have in Shahrisabz. On the road, closer to the pass, views of mountains and slopes open up.

9:00: a stop at the pass

On the Takhtakaracha Pass there are viewpoints and roadside stalls with tea and fruit. Stop for 15 to 20 minutes, have tea and take photos. Do not hurry: it is beautiful here.

9:30: arrival in Shahrisabz

Start with Ak-Saray, Tamerlane's summer residence. Only the mighty towers of the huge portal survive, but even their scale is striking: around 38 metres in the surviving part. Entry is paid; climb the stairs to appreciate the sweep. Allow about an hour.

11:00: Dorut Tilyavat and Gumbazi Seyidan

The Dorut Tilyavat ensemble includes the Shamsuddin Kulal mausoleum and the Kok-Gumbaz Mosque (Blue Dome). Nearby is Gumbazi Seyidan, a mausoleum of Tamerlane's descendants. These are quiet, beautiful places. Allow about 1.5 hours.

12:30: the Timur monument and a stroll

Walk around the central square and green avenues. In the centre stands a monument to Amir Timur, with a park beside it. It is pleasant to rest in the shade here.

13:00: lunch

Have lunch at a teahouse or cafe: plov, lagman, shashlik. Shahrisabz is known for local dishes and herbs. Try the samsa and flatbread. Prices are moderate, but check on the spot.

14:30: the bazaar or free time

If you want to buy souvenirs or fruit, look into the local bazaar. In season there are many apricots, grapes and pomegranates.

15:30: heading to Samarkand

Leave no later than 15:30 to 16:00 to be back for dinner. It is better to cross the pass in daylight.

18:00: back and dinner

By 17:30 to 18:00 you are back in Samarkand. Have dinner at a teahouse and rest.

Practical tips

  • Bring water, a hat and comfortable shoes.
  • Modest clothing for mausoleums and mosques.
  • Cash for tickets and purchases.
  • Do not plan more than three or four sights in Shahrisabz: time is short.
  • It is windy on the pass; take a light jacket, even in summer.
  • The road from Samarkand to Shahrisabz can be busy with trucks, so it is better to travel in the morning.

Getting there

The most convenient way is to choose a shared ride. On the Samarkand — Shahrisabz page drivers post trips with different departure times, and in the return direction on Shahrisabz — Samarkand you can book a seat in advance to get back in the evening. That way you do not depend on minibus schedules and can plan the day as you wish. You book a seat in the Yo'ldosh app, drivers are verified, and the price is usually lower than a taxi. Other directions are collected on the all routes page.

If you want to stay

If the day turns out too short, you can stay overnight in Shahrisabz: small guesthouses are found in the centre. Then you can see the town in the evening and morning, when the light is especially lovely.

The takeaway

Shahrisabz is a great contrast to busy Samarkand: quieter, greener and more intimate. In a day you can see the essentials, drive a beautiful pass and return for dinner. Leave early, carry water and enjoy the day unhurriedly.
