Uzbekistan in Spring: Blossoms, Tulips and Mild Weather
What to expect from March to May: blossoms, holidays, weather by region and what to pack. Spring is a favourite season for many travellers.

Spring in Uzbekistan is short but beautiful. First the foothills turn green, then apricots, almonds and peaches blossom, and in April tulips appear on the steppes and slopes. The weather is mild, the heat has not arrived, and you can sightsee without exhaustion. No wonder spring is considered one of the best seasons for a trip.
March: awakening
At the start of the month Tashkent and Samarkand are still cool, +8 to +15 C by day, with rain and gusty wind. By mid-month it warms up, and on 21 March Navruz is celebrated: festivities, sumalak and folk games. It is a good time to see traditions, but bring a waterproof jacket.
In the southern regions of Surkhandarya, Kashkadarya and Khorezm, spring arrives earlier and greenery opens at the start of the month. Snow still lies in the mountains.
April: peak beauty
April is the classic month for travel. Days of +18 to +25 C, orchards in bloom and grass turning green on hillsides. April is exactly when to look for tulips: wild tulips grow in the foothills and steppes, especially around Tashkent, Nurata, the Zaamin mountains and Kashkadarya. Flowering usually lasts only two to four weeks and depends on the year, so ask locals where it is happening now.
In cities it is nice to walk in parks and old neighbourhoods. Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva are comfortable in April: warm by day, fresh in the evening.
May: warm and sunny
In May it is +25 to +32 C by day and already hot in the south. Orchards finish flowering, but the first strawberries, cherries, greens and young radishes appear. Bazaars are full of fresh vegetables and berries. The mountains are good for walking: trails are dry and the air is clean.
In the desert cities the second half of May can be hot by day, so plan activities for morning and evening.

- Mountains. Gorges around Tashkent, waterfalls in spring melt, green slopes. In May most trails are open.

What to pack
- A light jacket or windbreaker for the evening.
- A thin raincoat or umbrella: spring brings showers.
- Comfortable closed shoes for walking, ideally with tread for mountain trails.
- Layered clothing: cool in the morning, warm by day.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen: spring sun is deceptive.
- Clothes for visiting mosques: covered shoulders and knees, and a scarf for women.
- Antihistamines if you are allergic to pollen: there is a lot of it in blossom season.
Choosing a route
For the classics. Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva. April and early May are the best time.
For nature. The Tashkent foothills, Fergana and the mountains around Nurata. Choose April.
For holidays. The start of the month, Navruz.
For photographers. Blossoming orchards, tulips and soft light in the cities.
Getting around
In spring roads are dry, but rain can make highways slippery. The train is convenient between big cities, while Fergana, the foothills and smaller towns are easier by car. For the Fergana Valley there is the Tashkent to Fergana route, about 300 km over the Kamchik pass, usually 4 to 5 hours. For the classic route, Tashkent to Samarkand is about 300 km and 3.5 to 4 hours.
In the Yo'ldosh app, drivers publish trips between cities in advance; you choose the departure time, book a seat and see the driver's profile. In spring this helps when you want to reach an orchard or tulips early in the morning, while the light is soft.
Practical tips
- Demand for lodging rises in spring, especially in April. Book ahead.
- Do not pick tulips or other wild flowers: many species are protected.
- In the mountains, rockfalls and downpours are possible in spring. Follow the forecast and stay out of riverbeds.
- Drink more water: the gap between morning and daytime temperatures is deceptive.
- Visit bazaars: the first berries and greens appear there in spring.
Bottom line
Spring means blossoming orchards, gentle sun and beautiful light. If your schedule is flexible, pick April; if you want holidays, start with Navruz. Choose your route on the pages for Tashkent to Fergana and Tashkent to Samarkand.
