Samarkand in One Day: A Route Through the Main Monuments
A step-by-step one-day plan with timings: the Registan in the morning, Gur-Emir, Bibi-Khanym and Siab, Shah-i-Zinda at sunset and the evening Registan.

One day in Samarkand is not much, but with a good plan you can see the essentials. The city is compact in its historic centre, and the main monuments lie fairly close to each other. Here is how to build the day so you do not rush or bake in the sun.
Preparation
Before you set out, keep a few things in mind:
- Shoes. Comfortable and closed, because you will walk a lot.
- Clothing. Modest, covering shoulders and knees, especially for entering mausoleums.
- Hat and water. Particularly in summer months.
- Cash. For tickets, tea and souvenirs. Tickets to monuments are bought on the spot; check prices in advance.
- Timing. Opening hours of monuments can change, so check current information.
The route hour by hour
8:00: the Registan
Start with Samarkand's main square, before the heat and crowds. The three madrasas, Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor and Tilla-Kari, form the famous ensemble you have surely seen on postcards. In the morning the light is soft and tourists are few. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours: walk through the courtyards of the madrasas, look into the souvenir shops and see the patterns from inside.
10:00: the Gur-Emir Mausoleum
From the Registan to Gur-Emir it is a few minutes by car or a walk of around 15 to 20 minutes. It is the tomb of Tamerlane and his descendants, with a turquoise dome and rich decoration inside. The visit takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Keep quiet and modest inside.
11:15: Bibi-Khanym Mosque and Siab Bazaar
Bibi-Khanym is a huge mosque built under Tamerlane. Its scale impresses even in part-ruined form, since some of the structures have been restored. Next to it is Siab Bazaar, where you can buy flatbread, dried fruit, sweets and spices. Allow about 1.5 hours for both places. Read more about the bazaar in our article on Siab.
13:00: lunch and rest
Midday is hot, so the best option is lunch at a teahouse in the shade. Order plov, lagman or shashlik and drink green tea. After eating, rest for half an hour. It is not lost time but a way to save strength for the second half.
14:30: a free window
After lunch you can:
- return to the hotel for a short rest;
- look into the Ulugh Beg museum or observatory if you have time;
- stroll through the streets of the old town.
If you came for just one day, keep this window flexible.
16:30: Shah-i-Zinda
The Shah-i-Zinda ensemble is a street of mausoleums with blue and turquoise majolica. It is one of the most beautiful and sacred complexes in the region. Come in the second half of the day: the light softens and the patterns look especially striking. The visit takes 1 to 1.5 hours. Follow the rules: quiet, modest dress and respect for pilgrims.
18:30: evening Registan and dinner
Return to the Registan for sunset. In the evening the illuminated madrasas look different from by day, and many locals stroll on the square. Then have dinner at a restaurant or cafe nearby. Order signature dishes: Samarkand plov, shashlik, samsa.
The plan in a table
| Time | Place | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 8:00 | Registan | 1.5 to 2 h |
| 10:00 | Gur-Emir | 0.5 to 1 h |
| 11:15 | Bibi-Khanym and Siab | 1.5 h |
| 13:00 | Lunch and rest | 1.5 h |
| 16:30 | Shah-i-Zinda | 1 to 1.5 h |
| 18:30 | Evening Registan, dinner | 2 h |
Practical tips
- Leave a time cushion: for travel between points, queues and rest.
- Carry water and snack lightly so you do not lose strength.
- If the day is very hot, move part of the programme to the evening.
- Do not accept "special" offers at the entrance; compare prices.
- For getting around the city, a taxi or a pre-agreed route is convenient.
Getting there from Tashkent and back
If you live or are staying in the capital, a day in Samarkand can fit into one trip. It is best to depart at 5:00 to 6:00 to arrive by 9:00 to 10:00, and the road takes about 3.5 to 4 hours. On the Tashkent — Samarkand page drivers post early trips, and in the evening you can return on the Samarkand — Tashkent route. It is worth agreeing on a convenient time in advance and booking seats. Booking is done in the Yo'ldosh app, drivers are verified, and the price is usually lower than a taxi. See all directions on the all routes page.
If time is short
If your day is limited, keep:
- The Registan (morning).
- Gur-Emir.
- Shah-i-Zinda (sunset).
These three give the main impression. You can skip Siab and Bibi-Khanym and combine lunch with a stroll.
The takeaway
Samarkand in a day is more an introduction than full immersion. But with good timing you will see the main monuments and feel the atmosphere of the city. Come with energy in reserve and a wish to return: for most travellers one day is enough to want to come again.
