Bekabad: A Syr Darya Town on the Tajik Border

A steelworks, the Farhad hydropower station with its legendary name, the banks of the Syr Darya and fishing: what to see in Bekabad and how to enjoy the outdoors nearby.

Bekabad: A Syr Darya Town on the Tajik Border

Bekabad is the southernmost town in Tashkent Province, squeezed between the Syr Darya and the state border with Tajikistan. Here the river leaves the Fergana Valley for the plains, and back in the 1940s a dam and hydropower station were built at this spot, with a large steelworks beside them. That is how a small settlement became a town of steelmakers and power engineers. Tourists rarely come, but if you like rivers, fishing and industrial history, Bekabad may well appeal. Here is what to see and how to behave in a border town.

A little history

People have long crossed the Syr Darya here: the river narrows at this point, and routes ran across it between the Tashkent oasis and Khujand. In the 20th century, especially during the Second World War, heavy industry arrived.

  • The Farhad hydropower station. Construction of a hydro scheme on the Syr Darya began in the 1940s. Its name comes from Farhad, hero of Alisher Navoi's poem "Farhad and Shirin," who in legend cut through rock to bring water. The image of a man taming a river suited the project perfectly.
  • The steelworks. The country's largest ferrous metallurgy plant has operated here since the war years and still shapes the town's life today.

What to see in Bekabad

Bekabad is a compact town, built mostly in the mid-20th century.

  • The center. Buildings from the 1940s–60s with columns and moldings, wide streets and alleys.
  • The park and riverfront. Green spaces where residents stroll in the evening. The Syr Darya is wide and fast here.
  • Monuments to the builders. The town has monuments and murals dedicated to the people who built the power station and worked the steel.
  • The bazaar. Fish from the Syr Darya, fruit, vegetables and dairy.
  • River views. From the high bank you can see the water, islands and mountains on the far side.

Getting outdoors

The banks of the Syr Darya

Bekabad's main natural asset is the river. Its banks are lined with tugai, riverside thickets of willow, poplar and reeds. People fish, picnic and simply relax by the water here.

If you plan to fish:

  1. Ask locals where fishing is permitted, as the border zone has restrictions.
  2. Do not go into the water: the Syr Darya's current is strong and treacherous, and swimming is dangerous.
  3. Bring mosquito repellent, especially on warm evenings.
  4. Do not leave rubbish on the bank.

Orchards and surroundings

Orchards and fields surround the town. In spring the apricot and apple trees blossom, and in summer the bazaars are full of fruit and melons.

Border zone rules

Bekabad lies on the state border, and it is important to keep this in mind.

RuleWhy
Keep your passport with youdocument checks are possible
Do not photograph the dam, power station or plantthese are restricted sites
Keep away from border posts and fencesit is forbidden and dangerous
Cross the border only at official checkpointsanything else breaks the law

If you are unsure whether you can walk or take photos somewhere, ask locals or simply skip it.

Where to eat

Bekabad has teahouses and cafes with the usual menu: plov, shashlik, lagman and samsa. Try fried or baked fish from the Syr Darya, which some places by the river cook and the bazaar sells. Prices are low but change, so check on the spot.

Where to stay

There are few hotels in town and the choice is modest. If you plan to stay overnight, book ahead and confirm the terms. Many people visit Bekabad as a day trip from Tashkent.

Getting there

Bekabad is about 150 km from Tashkent, a drive of roughly 2–2.5 hours. A railway runs through town, but trains are not always convenient.

Many people travel the Bekabad — Tashkent route, including plant workers, students and families, so finding a shared ride in either direction is usually easy. You pay only for your seat, and the driver knows the road and the checkpoints well.

Sample day trip

  • Morning: leave Tashkent and reach Bekabad by 10 am.
  • Before lunch: walk around the center and the park and take in the Syr Darya views.
  • Lunch: plov or fish at a teahouse.
  • Afternoon: relax by the river or fish at a permitted spot.
  • Evening: visit the bazaar and head back to Tashkent.

Tips

  • Season. Spring and autumn are best. Summer is hot, though a little cooler by the river.
  • Clothing. Comfortable shoes for walking along the bank and a hat.
  • Cash. Small cafes and the bazaar mostly work with cash.
  • Signal. Near the border your phone may switch to a neighboring network's roaming, so turn roaming off to avoid extra charges.

Why go

Bekabad is where you can see the Syr Darya reach the plains, how 20th-century industry transformed a whole region and how people relax by a great river.
