Fergana to Kuvasay: Reaching the Mountains on the Valley's Southern Edge
Kuvasay is a small town at the foot of the Alay foothills, half an hour from Fergana. How to get there by minibus, taxi or shared ride, and how to continue to the reservoir.

Fergana is one of the greenest cities in the valley, but from here the mountains are only a line on the horizon. To get closer to them, locals head to Kuvasay, a small industrial town in the southeast at the very foot of the Alay foothills. It is cooler here than in Fergana, and the area has reservoirs and spots for relaxing by the water. Here is how to get there and how to go further.
Where Kuvasay is
Kuvasay lies southeast of Fergana, about 20 to 25 km away, close to the border with Kyrgyzstan. The town stands on a mountain stream of the same name where it emerges from the foothills into the valley. Kuvasay is known as an industrial centre, but for visitors its appeal lies mainly in the nearby mountains and reservoirs.
| Option | Travel time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Taxi or private car | 25 to 35 min | fast, no stops |
| Minibus | 35 to 50 min | cheap, with stops |
| Shared ride | 25 to 35 min | seat booked in advance |
Getting there from Fergana
Minibuses
Minibuses to Kuvasay leave from the Fergana bus station and from stops on the eastern edge of the city. They run frequently, especially in the morning when people commute to work. This is the cheapest option.
Taxis
A shared taxi is convenient if you do not want to wait: the car fills up with passengers and leaves. You can also hire a taxi outright, which makes sense if you are heading straight to a reservoir or into the hills and need the driver to wait.
Shared rides
On the Fergana to Kuvasay route, Yo'ldosh lets you find a driver leaving at the time you need and book a seat. This is useful at weekends when minibuses are crowded, and for anyone who travels to Kuvasay regularly.
Continuing to the reservoir
The area around Kuvasay has reservoirs that draw holidaymakers from across the region in summer, the best known being the Karkidon reservoir. There is almost no regular public transport to the water, so your options are:
- A taxi from Kuvasay. You can arrange a local driver at the bus station or near the bazaar. Discuss the return trip right away: will the driver wait or come back at an agreed time?
- A shared ride all the way. At weekends many people drive to the water in their own cars and are happy to take passengers.
- A whole car from Fergana. If there are several of you, this may be the most convenient choice.
Roads in the foothills are narrow in places and busy at weekends, so aim to get back before dark.
Things to do in and around Kuvasay
- Relax by the water. Lakeside picnics are the main summer tradition. Remember that swimming is not safe everywhere: the water is cold and the bottom uneven. Follow the signs and keep an eye on children.
- Walks in the foothills. In spring the hills turn green and fill with flowers, and higher ground offers views over the valley.
- The bazaar. The local bazaar is where you buy fruit, bread and everything else for a picnic.
- Cooler air. Even in a heatwave, evenings in Kuvasay are noticeably fresher than in Fergana.
Planning your day
To keep the trip from turning into endless waiting for transport, a simple plan works well:
- Leave Fergana at 8 or 9 am and you will be in Kuvasay half an hour later.
- Make a short stop at the bazaar for fruit, bread and water.
- Move on to the reservoir or the foothills and spend a few hours outdoors.
- Head back at 4 or 5 pm to beat the evening traffic and return in daylight.
If it is your first visit, ask the driver which spots by the water are currently open and where it is best to stop, as things change from season to season.
Seasons
- Spring (April to May): the best time for walks across green hills.
- Summer (June to August): the season for days by the water. Weekends are crowded, so set off early.
- Autumn (September to October): calm, warm by day and cool in the evening.
- Winter: the road to Kuvasay is open all year, but higher in the foothills you may find snow and ice.
Practical tips
- Border zone. Kuvasay is close to the Kyrgyz border. Carry your passport, stay away from border installations and do not photograph them.
- Mobile signal. Coverage may weaken nearer the mountains. Agree a meeting place and time with your driver in advance.
- Cash. Taxis and the bazaar mostly take cash.
- Food and water. There are not always cafes or shops by the reservoir, so bring what you need.
- Litter. Take your rubbish with you to keep these places clean for everyone.
- Prices. Minibus and taxi fares change, so check before you travel.
Back to Fergana
On weekend evenings traffic towards Fergana is heavy and minibuses leave packed. To avoid waiting, find a Kuvasay to Fergana ride on Yo'ldosh in advance and book a seat. That is especially handy when you are coming back from the water and would rather not rely on a chance lift.
Kuvasay is an easy way to swap hot Fergana for the cool of the foothills. The drive takes under half an hour, and the reservoirs and hills nearby suit both a quick outing and a full day outdoors. For more routes across the Fergana Valley, see the routes page.
