Uzbekistan in Autumn: Harvest, Weddings and the Velvet Season
Why September and October are considered the best months to travel, what the bazaars sell at that time and where walking is most pleasant.

Autumn in Uzbekistan is called the "velvet season", and the name is deserved. The heat fades, the air turns transparent, the light softens, and bazaars overflow with grapes, pomegranates, persimmons and the last melons. It is the time of harvest and weddings, when the country looks especially generous. For a traveller, autumn is one of the most convenient periods.
September: the heat leaves
In early September it is still +30 to +35 C by day, but evenings are already gentle. By mid-month temperatures drop to +25 to +30 C, and strolls in Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva become comfortable. It is the most popular month with tourists, so book lodging and tickets early. Independence Day on 1 September brings festive events in Tashkent.
October: the golden month
Many consider October ideal. Days of +18 to +25 C, cool nights and clear skies. Leaves are yellow and red, the evening light is golden and haze rarely interferes with photography. In the mountains it is already cool, but the trails are free and colourful. By the end of the month evenings call for a jacket.
November: quiet
November is cooler and greyer: +8 to +15 C by day, mostly overcast, with rain possible. There are fewer tourists, lower prices and free sights. A good time for those who love quiet and do not fear the cool.
What is in the bazaars
Autumn is the season of plenty. At the markets you will find:
- Grapes. Dozens of varieties, from seedless to table types. Raisins, juice and sweets are made from them.
- Pomegranates. Juicy and sweet-sour, with the best known from Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya. Freshly pressed pomegranate juice is sold on the streets.
- Persimmons. Bright and sweet, especially in October and November.
- Apples, pears, quince. The fruit season is in full swing.
- Nuts and dried fruit. Walnuts, almonds, dried apricots, figs.
- Late melons. Winter melons keep until spring and get sweeter.
- Pumpkin and vegetables. The basis of autumn dishes, such as pumpkin samsa.
It is good to visit the bazaar in the morning: the rows are full and vendors gladly offer a taste. Ask what came in today.
Wedding season
Autumn is the main time for weddings. After the harvest people have time, money and weather that allows big celebrations. With luck you will hear music from restaurants and see decorated processions and cars with ribbons. If you are invited to a toy (wedding feast), accept: it is a sign of great hospitality. Come in neat clothes, bring a small gift or an envelope, and do not refuse the food.
On the practical side: restaurants and halls are booked in the evenings, there are more cars on the roads at weekends, and taxis and seats in shared cars go quickly.
Where to walk in autumn
- Samarkand. The Registan, Shah-i-Zinda and Gur-Emir in soft light. The surrounding orchards and hills are colourful.
- Bukhara. The old town at sunset, Lyabi-Hauz in the evening, comfortable coolness.
- Khiva. Itchan Kala without summer heat and without crowds.
- Tashkent. Parks with yellow leaves, embankments and evening walks.
- Mountains. Chimgan, Beldersay and Nurata: clear days, golden leaves. Watch the weather, since by November there may be snow at altitude.
- Fergana. Autumn in the valley is warm, with plenty of fruit and craft workshops.
What to pack
- Layers: warm by day, cool in the evening.
- A light jacket or windbreaker, something warmer by November.
- Comfortable closed shoes.
- An umbrella or thin raincoat.
- A shopping bag: you will want a lot at the bazaar.
- Cash in sums for small purchases.
How to travel
In autumn it is easy to combine train and car. The core route for many is Samarkand to Bukhara, about 270 km and roughly 3 to 3.5 hours. From the capital to Samarkand there is the Tashkent to Samarkand route, about 300 km and 3.5 to 4 hours. At peak season and on weekends train tickets sell out fast, so consider car travel as well. In the Yo'ldosh app, drivers publish trips in advance: you pick a time, book a seat and see the driver's verified profile. It helps when you must leave on a day with no tickets left.
Practical tips
- There is less daylight in autumn: by late October it gets dark early, so plan travel and walks in advance.
- Value your mornings: autumn light is best for photos.
- Do not forget water and sun protection in September, as the sun still burns.
- Check the forecast for the mountains: weather changes quickly in autumn.
- Haggle politely at the bazaar, and buy from roadside farmers what they grew themselves.
Bottom line
Autumn is when Uzbekistan is generous, beautiful and convenient for travel. Come in September or October, plan ahead and bring a good appetite. Choose directions on the pages for Samarkand to Bukhara and Tashkent to Samarkand.
