Termez to Denau: Travelling to Northern Surkhandarya

Denau is the main town of northern Surkhandarya and the gateway to the Hissar mountains. We compare train, minibus and car, and describe the valley road and the sights along the way.

Termez to Denau: Travelling to Northern Surkhandarya

Surkhandarya is Uzbekistan's southernmost region, stretching along the valley of the river of the same name from the Amu Darya in the south to the Hissar range in the north. Termez sits right on the border, on the banks of the Amu Darya, while Denau lies at the far end of the valley, surrounded by mountains. Between them are about 130–140 km of road through cotton fields, orchards and small towns. Locals use this route every day, and so do travellers heading for the mountain districts of Sariosiyo or Boysun.

Distance and travel time

The road from Termez to Denau heads north up the Surkhandarya valley through several district towns, including Jarkurgan and Kumkurgan. By car the trip takes 2–2.5 hours; by minibus, about 3 hours.

By train

A railway runs up the Surkhandarya valley, linking Termez with the north of the region. There are few passenger trains on this section and the timetable changes, so you cannot always plan the trip around the train. If there is a convenient service, it is a cheap and relaxed option. Check timetables and stops on the railway website or app.

Minibuses and buses

Marshrutka minibuses and intercity buses run between Termez and Denau. They leave from Termez bus station and stop in towns along the way. This is the most affordable option and the most popular with locals.

Useful to know:

  • there are more services in the morning, fewer towards evening;
  • minibuses wait until they are full, so departure times can slip;
  • in summer a vehicle without air conditioning gets very hot, so choose morning departures where possible.

Shared rides and taxis

Many drivers travel regularly between Termez and Denau for work, study or family. On Yo'ldosh they publish their trips and you book a seat in the app. Drivers are verified, you see the departure time and price in advance, and a seat typically costs far less than a taxi for one. For travellers who do not want to wait in the heat for a minibus, it is a convenient choice.

A door-to-door taxi suits a group or anyone with a lot of luggage. Agree on the price in advance.

The valley road: what to watch for

  1. Heat. Surkhandarya is the hottest place in the country, with summer daytime temperatures above 45 degrees. Leave early in the morning.
  2. Checkpoints. This is a border region and document checks on the roads are common. Keep your passport with you.
  3. Rural stretches. Villages bring pedestrians, cyclists and livestock onto the road.
  4. Harvest season. In autumn the highway carries cotton lorries and tractors.

What to see along the way

The Jarkurgan Minaret

Near Jarkurgan stands a minaret from the early 12th century, one of the oldest in Central Asia. Its walls are decorated with unusual fluted brickwork in vertical ribs. The minaret stands on a small mound among the fields, and a stop there takes about half an hour. If you are on a shared ride, agree on a short stop with the driver in advance.

The Surkhandarya valley

The road itself is a good chance to see rural life in the south: cotton fields, pomegranate and apricot orchards, and small roadside fruit stalls. In autumn the pomegranates Surkhandarya is famous for are sold along the road.

Denau: what to see in town

Denau is a lively town with a large market that draws people from the northern districts and mountain villages. The town's main historic monument is the 16th-century Said Atalyk Madrasa.

Denau is also a handy base for trips into the mountains:

  • to Sariosiyo and the Sangardak waterfall;
  • to the Tupalang Reservoir;
  • towards Boysun and the Hissar range.

It is easier to find a local driver for mountain roads here than in Termez.

If you are heading on into the mountains

Many travellers pass through Denau on their way to mountain villages. In that case it makes sense to leave Termez early, reach Denau by lunchtime, eat at the market and head into the hills in daylight. Mountain roads are best driven before dark: there is no lighting and the bends are sharp. If you are short of time, look for a driver going from Termez straight to Sariosiyo or Boysun; such trips are sometimes listed too, and they save you a change in Denau.

When to go

  • Spring (March to May) is the best time: greenery, blossom and comfortable temperatures.
  • Summer is very hot in the valley, but the mountains near Denau offer cooler air.
  • Autumn brings the pomegranate and persimmon harvest and mild weather.
  • Winter is mild in the valley, but snow can fall in the mountains above Denau.

Practical tips

  • Carry water in any season, and always in summer.
  • Cash is useful: markets and minibuses take cash.
  • Foreign visitors should carry their passport and registration documents.
  • Do not photograph guarded sites or checkpoints.
