Urgench to Nukus: between the capitals of Khorezm and Karakalpakstan

A short but not obvious route across the Amu Darya: how long it takes, where to find a car, how to cross the river and how to fit Nukus into a trip around Khorezm.

Urgench to Nukus: between the capitals of Khorezm and Karakalpakstan

On the map Urgench and Nukus look almost like neighbours, but between them runs not only the Amu Darya but also an administrative border: Urgench is the centre of Khorezm region, and Nukus is the capital of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. For travellers, that means there are fewer clear, direct transport options than you might like, and information about them is scattered. Here it is all in one place: distance, the road, transport options and ready-made plans for combining the trip with Khiva, Muynaq and the Savitsky Museum.

The basics

  • Distance: about 150–160 km depending on the road.
  • By car: about 2–2.5 hours.
  • By minibus or bus: 2.5–3.5 hours with stops.
  • From Khiva to Nukus: add 30–40 minutes from Khiva to Urgench.

The road

Urgench and Nukus are on opposite sides of the Amu Darya, so you always cross the river by bridge. The road runs through cotton fields, canals and villages of the lower Amu Darya, the agricultural heart of the region. The landscape is flat but lively: irrigation ditches, mulberry trees along the roads, and in summer melons and watermelons for sale on the roadside.

If the route goes through Khodjeyli, as you approach Nukus you can visit the Mizdakhan necropolis, an ancient cemetery on hills with mausoleums and the ruins of a fortress. The stop takes 40–60 minutes and is well worth it.

Which road the driver takes depends on the state of roads and bridges in a given season, as there have been roadworks in different years. Check the route with your driver.

Transport options

Shared rides

There is a lot of business travel between Urgench and Nukus: people go to banks, ministries, university and relatives. So cars run regularly, especially in the morning. On Yo'ldosh, drivers publish trips on the Urgench — Nukus route and back on the Nukus — Urgench route. You see the departure time, price per seat and driver's profile, and book in the app. For tourists it is a convenient option: no need to find a taxi stand, negotiate on the spot or wait for a car to fill up.

Minibuses and buses

Minibuses and buses run between the cities from their bus stations. They are cheaper, but leave when full or on a timetable you should check locally. With lots of luggage or in the heat, this is not the most comfortable choice.

Taxi

A private taxi is the fastest and most flexible option, especially for a group or if you want to stop at Mizdakhan. Agree the price before getting in, and check straight away whether waiting at Mizdakhan is included. If you are coming from Khiva, many hotels can help you find a driver.

Train

There are rail links between the regions, but trains are infrequent and not always well timed. For such a short trip a car is almost always more practical. If you still want to take the train, check the timetable on the railway's website or app.

Fitting Nukus into a Khorezm trip

Many travellers reach Khiva and are not sure whether to go further. If you have two or three spare days, the answer is yes. Here are some plans.

Khiva, Nukus and Muynaq (3 days)

  1. Day 1: morning from Khiva to Nukus via Urgench, afternoon at the Savitsky Museum.
  2. Day 2: a round trip to the ship graveyard in Muynaq.
  3. Day 3: back to Urgench, or fly from Nukus to Tashkent.

Nukus on the way to Khiva (2 days)

If you flew into Nukus rather than Urgench: a day in Nukus, then on to Khiva via Urgench or with a detour to the Ellikkala fortresses.

Short version (1 day)

Leave Urgench early, see the Savitsky Museum and Mizdakhan, and return in the evening. Packed, but possible.

What to see in Nukus in a day

Nukus is not a museum city like Khiva but an ordinary modern city with wide avenues. Still, it has something that draws visitors from all over the world:

  • The Savitsky Museum of Art. A collection of Russian avant-garde art gathered in a remote province during Soviet times by the artist and collector Igor Savitsky, plus the archaeology of ancient Khorezm and Karakalpak applied art: jewellery, embroidery and yurt textiles. Allow at least three or four hours.
  • The central bazaar. A place to try local food and buy dried fruit for the road.
  • Mizdakhan. If you did not stop on the way, it is 20–30 minutes from the centre by car.

Practical tips

  • Leave in the morning. The Savitsky Museum is open during the day, and arriving at opening time is the best way to see it in peace.
  • Cash. Small cafes and markets along the way do not all take cards.
  • Heat and dust. Summer in the lower Amu Darya is hot and dry, so bring water and a hat.
  • Return tickets. If you plan to fly from Nukus to Tashkent, buy your ticket early, as there are few flights.
