Andijan to Qorasuv: The Road to the Kyrgyz Border
Qorasuv is a border town in the east of the valley, and many people pass through it on the way to Osh. How to get there from Andijan and what to know about crossing the border.

Qorasuv sits at the far eastern edge of the Andijan region, right up against the border. Facing it on the other bank is a Kyrgyz town of the same name, Kara-Suu, known for one of the largest markets in the region, and Osh is just a couple of dozen kilometres further south. That makes the Andijan to Qorasuv road important not only for locals but for anyone travelling to Kyrgyzstan. Here is how to get there and what to prepare for if you are going further.
Distance and travel time
Qorasuv is about 35 km from Andijan. The road heads east through villages and orchards and takes 40 to 50 minutes by car or about an hour by minibus.
| Section | Distance | Travel time |
|---|---|---|
| Andijan to Qorasuv | about 35 km | 40 to 60 min |
| Kara-Suu (Kyrgyzstan) to Osh | about 20 to 25 km | 30 to 40 min |
The table does not include the border crossing itself, which can take anywhere from half an hour to several hours depending on the day and the crowds.
Getting there from Andijan
Minibuses
Minibuses to Qorasuv leave from the Andijan bus station and from stands near the central bazaar. They run regularly and more often in the morning. They are cheap, but they detour into villages along the way.
Taxis
A shared taxi is faster: the car fills up and drives with hardly any stops. If you have luggage or need to be somewhere at a fixed time, you can hire the whole car.
Shared rides
Yo'ldosh lists the Andijan to Qorasuv route. You book a seat with a driver who is going to Qorasuv anyway and know the departure time in advance. This is handy if you want to reach the border early in the morning while queues are short.
If you are continuing to Osh
It is important to understand that a shared ride or taxi from Andijan takes you to the Uzbek side. People usually cross the border on their own and continue by local transport on the Kyrgyz side.
What to know before you go:
- Documents. You need a valid passport or another document recognised for entry into Kyrgyzstan by citizens of your country. Entry rules depend on nationality, so check them in advance on official sources.
- Border crossings. Several crossing points operate between Andijan and Osh, and their rules may differ for different categories of travellers. Check the latest information before you set off.
- Customs. Do not carry other people's belongings or parcels, respect the limits on importing and exporting currency, and fill in a declaration if required.
- Photography. Photographing border installations and checkpoints is forbidden.
- Currency. Kyrgyzstan has its own currency, the som. It is handy to change a little cash in advance at official exchange points.
Qorasuv itself
Even if you are not crossing the border, Qorasuv has something to offer. It is a lively trading town: the bazaar sells fruit, fabric and crockery, and the borderland atmosphere shows in everything from the local dialect to the goods on sale and the pace of the streets. The colourful market rows are great for photographers, but remember to ask vendors for permission.
Osh: why people go
For many, Qorasuv is the first step on the way to Osh, one of the oldest cities in Central Asia. Its main sight is the sacred Sulaiman-Too mountain in the city centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with views over Osh and the surrounding mountains from the top. Osh also has a big bazaar and good transport links to the mountain regions of Kyrgyzstan.
Practical tips
- Leave early. Morning queues at the border are usually shorter, and you keep time in hand for the road to Osh.
- Keep documents handy. You may be asked for your passport several times on the road and at the checkpoint.
- Travel light. The less luggage you have, the faster the inspection and the easier the transfers.
- Mobile service. After crossing, your local SIM card may work on roaming or not at all. Save the addresses and contacts you need beforehand.
- Coming back. If you are returning the same day, factor in the checkpoint's working hours and queue time.
- Prices. Minibus and taxi fares change, so check before you travel.
