Andijan to Khanabad and Khojaobod: Day Trips to the Region's East
Two towns in eastern Andijan: Khanabad near the reservoir on the Kara Darya and orchard-filled Khojaobod. How to get there, how long it takes and how to return the same day.

Eastern Andijan is where the Fergana Valley meets the foothills and flat fields give way to rolling hills. There are two notable district towns here: Khanabad, near which the large Andijan reservoir was built on the Kara Darya, and Khojaobod, a quiet town among orchards. Both are close to Andijan, and either makes an easy day trip. Here is how to get there and how to plan the way back.
Distances and travel times
Both towns lie east and southeast of Andijan, not far from the Kyrgyz border.
| Route | Distance | By car | By minibus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Andijan to Khanabad | about 35 km | 40 to 50 min | about 1 h |
| Andijan to Khojaobod | about 25 to 30 km | 30 to 40 min | 45 to 60 min |
These figures are approximate and depend on where you leave from in Andijan and on traffic.
Getting to Khanabad
Khanabad is a town in the east of the region, where the Kara Darya leaves the mountains and enters the valley. Nearby stands the dam of the Andijan reservoir, one of the largest in the Fergana Valley. It supplies water to fields across the area, and for many visitors it is the main reason to come.
Transport
- Minibuses run to Khanabad from the Andijan bus station and from stops on the eastern edge of the city, more frequently in the morning.
- Shared taxis are faster and more convenient, especially if you want to stop by the reservoir.
- Shared rides: Yo'ldosh lists the Andijan to Khanabad route, where you can book a seat in advance with a driver heading there at the time you need.
What to see
- The reservoir. A wide expanse of water framed by hills is a beautiful sight, especially in spring. The dam is a restricted facility: stay out of closed areas, do not photograph protected structures and follow the guards' instructions.
- The foothills. The countryside around Khanabad is hilly and in spring is covered with greenery and poppies.
- The bazaar. The local bazaar is the place to buy fruit and fresh bread.
Getting to Khojaobod
Khojaobod is a district centre southeast of Andijan. It is a farming area of orchards and vineyards, known locally for its fruit. Few tourists come here, which makes it all the more interesting for seeing everyday life in rural Andijan.
Transport
- Minibuses leave from the bus station and from stands near Andijan's central bazaar.
- Shared taxis are handy if you want to get there faster.
- Shared rides: the Andijan to Khojaobod route is also on Yo'ldosh, where you pick a time and book a seat.
What to see
- Orchards. In spring apricot and apple trees blossom here, and in summer and autumn the bazaar overflows with fruit.
- The bazaar. A traditional market with local produce and baked goods.
- Rural scenery. Roads between villages, poplars along irrigation ditches and vineyards make up the classic Fergana Valley picture.
Getting back the same day
Both routes are short, so returning to Andijan in the evening is easy if you follow a few rules:
- Leave in the morning. Transport to district towns runs more often in the first half of the day, and you get more time on the ground.
- Head back before dark. After six or seven in the evening, minibuses become much scarcer.
- Arrange things in advance. If you plan to return later, find a ride back ahead of time or swap contacts with the driver who brought you.
- Combine the two. If you want to visit both towns in a day, ask your driver whether it is easy to travel directly between them, as that may be quicker than going back through Andijan.
A sample day covering both towns
If you want to see both district towns in one trip, a plan like this works well:
- 8:00 leave Andijan for Khojaobod and have breakfast at the bazaar.
- 10:30 head on towards Khanabad past country roads and orchards.
- 12:00 walk by the reservoir and around Khanabad, then lunch at a teahouse.
- 16:00 set off back to Andijan to beat the evening traffic.
The timings are rough, since transfer times depend on transport, so it is best to agree things with a driver in advance or book seats for each leg.
Seasons
- Spring is the best time, with orchards in bloom, green hills and mild weather.
- Summer is hot, but it is peak fruit season at the bazaars. Set off early in the morning.
- Autumn brings the grape and pomegranate harvest and pleasant weather.
- Winter means fog and cold, with slippery roads in places, so allow extra time.
Practical tips
- Documents. Both districts are near the Kyrgyz border. Carry your passport and stay away from border installations.
- Cash. District towns mostly run on cash, so carry small notes.
- Water and a hat. In summer these are essential for any trip around the valley.
- Prices. Minibus and taxi fares change, so check before you travel.
- Courtesy. In small towns everyone knows everyone, and a polite question to a passer-by almost always brings a detailed answer and an offer of help.
Eastern Andijan is not a postcard destination but the real valley, with orchards, a great reservoir and an unhurried pace of life. Khanabad and Khojaobod are easy to visit in a day, and shared rides make the journey simpler and cheaper than hiring a whole taxi. See every route across the valley on the routes page.
