Tashkent to Urgench: getting to Khorezm on business
A business traveller's view of the trip to Urgench: flights, trains, door-to-door cars, and how to fit a work trip into as few days as possible and get back quickly.

Most articles about getting to Khorezm are written for tourists: how to see Khiva, where to photograph the minarets. But hundreds of people travel to Urgench every day with no interest in Khiva at all: for negotiations, banks and government offices, site visits, suppliers or study. What matters to them is different: predictability, the ability to work on the way, and a quick trip back. This guide is for them: hardly any sightseeing, mostly logistics and practical advice.
Basic numbers
- Road distance: about 1,000 km via Bukhara, and roughly the same on other route options.
- Plane: about 1.5 hours in the air.
- Train: an overnight journey, much of a day on board depending on the service.
- Car: 12–14 hours of driving.
The plane: when every day counts
For a one- or two-day business trip, flying is practically the only option. Take a morning flight and you can be in a meeting in Urgench by lunchtime, as the airport is right next to the city. An evening return flight can let you fit the trip into a single day if the timetable works out.
Things to bear in mind:
- Book early. Fares to Urgench rise noticeably closer to the date, especially in the tourist season, when the plane is also full of visitors heading to Khiva.
- Timetables change with the seasons. The number of flights per day or week depends on the time of year, so check when planning.
- A fallback. If your flight is cancelled or moved, keep the train or a car in mind as plan B.
The train: work on the way and a night in a compartment
The night train to Urgench suits you if there is no rush but you want to save money. Board in Tashkent in the evening, get off in Urgench in the morning, and the day is free for meetings. In a compartment you can work on your laptop while there is signal and get a decent night's sleep. The downsides: few departures, tickets sell out in season, and mobile internet drops out on desert stretches.
A tip for business travellers: take a lower berth in a compartment. It is easier to work on and keeps your documents and devices close to you.
Door-to-door by car
A car makes sense when you are carrying samples, equipment or lots of documents, or are heading not to Urgench itself but to one of Khorezm's districts. The drive is long, 12–14 hours, so:
- it is best split over two days with a night in Bukhara;
- or go with a driver who knows the route and does it regularly;
- always leave early in the morning to cross the desert stretch in daylight.
In this case a shared ride is a good middle ground between flying and driving yourself. On Yo'ldosh, drivers who regularly travel the Tashkent — Urgench route publish their trips, showing the departure time, price per seat and driver's profile. You can agree on luggage and the drop-off address in the chat beforehand; many drivers will take you to a specific address.
How to get back quickly
The most common problem with a business trip to Khorezm is not getting there but getting back. The meeting ran over, today's flight has gone and the trains are sold out. What to do:
- Buy your return ticket straight away, even if you are not sure of the date. Returning or changing a ticket is usually easier than finding a new one on the last day.
- Check trains from both Urgench and Khiva. Khiva is 30–35 km away, and sometimes that is where the seats are.
- Look for shared rides for the next morning. Drivers from Khorezm to Tashkent often leave early, and a seat in a car may be the fastest way back if there are no plane tickets.
- Consider a connection. A car or train to Bukhara, then the high-speed train to Tashkent, can sometimes be faster than waiting for a direct option.
Comparison for a business trip
| Option | Travel time | Work on the way | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plane | about 1.5 h in the air | hardly | a short trip, every hour counts |
| Night train | overnight | yes, while there is signal | saving money and getting sleep |
| Seat in a car | 12–14 h | partly | cargo, a specific address, no flights |
| Your own car | 2 days | no | travelling around Khorezm's districts |
Practical tips
- Documents and devices. On the train keep them with you; in a car keep them in the cabin, not the boot.
- Connectivity. On desert stretches mobile internet can vanish for tens of kilometres. Download the files you need in advance.
- Money. ATMs and card payments are everywhere in Urgench, but cash is still useful in the districts.
- Heat. Khorezm is very hot in summer, so schedule meetings for the morning and travel for the cooler hours.
If you have a free evening
Even on a business trip it is worth setting aside an evening for Khiva: it is 30–40 minutes from Urgench by car, and a walk around Itchan Kala at sunset is a great way to unwind after a working day.
Trips on the Tashkent — Urgench route are published on Yo'ldosh, and return and other directions are on the routes page. If you drive this route regularly yourself, take a look at the for drivers section.
